It has been several years since I made a flameworked poppy brooch, but I was asked about them recently, and thought why not make a few and add them to the online shop?
So, here they are! Each poppy begins life as a glass rod, which is melted in the flame of my oxygen and propane glass torch. I begin with a piece of copper wire, to which I add a ball of black coloured glass. This is flattened on the end and shaped. The red rod is then melted and layers of red are wrapped around the black centre. Once the poppy shape has been created, it is put into the kiln to anneal.
I then take another piece of copper wire, and several different colours of green glass rods, melt the rods in the flame, and make a leaf shape. This too goes into the kiln to anneal and reduce stresses in the glass.
The kiln then gradually cools overnight. Once cooled, the glass components are removed, the wire cleaned of firescale and hand assembled and wired onto a brooch/pin component producing the handcrafted Poppy brooch.
Each is unique, and they are a great gift idea, and Remembrance gift
Please note, that due to the depth of these brooches, they need to ship as small parcel size.
Overall brooch size is approximately 6cm x 3cm x 3cm. Poppy diameter and leaf sizes vary, but the poppy is generally between about 2.5cm and 3cm in diameter.
